Library Services

Accessibility of library and information services

This plan describes the current state of accessibility of the Metropolia library and information services and the actions to improve accessibility.

The current situation

Metropolia Library aims to make its facilities, services and materials easily accessible to everyone. Staff aim to provide clear, understandable instructions on how to use the services.

The library is an active participant in accessibility and equality networks, both within and outside the university. Our accessibility experts are continuously improving accessibility.

Collections and digital services

The majority of library collections are now digital and available to Metropolia users at any time and from any location. The shelf classification system has been simplified for easier understanding. Efforts have been made to make online services as accessible as possible. The online library is MetCat Finna, which has good accessibility.

Instructions on how to use the library are available in an accessible format on MetCat Finna and LibGuides. However, the accessibility features of e-resources depend on the service provider.

Guidance services 

All library guidance services focus on understandability. The library offers guidance and advice on using information resources, particularly digital ones. Information on alternative access methods and the accessibility features of the services can be found in the LibGuides e-resources guide.

Appointment-based guidance services are available in both Finnish and English. The library also produces self-study materials, including Moodle courses and accessible videos.

The library collaborates with the Celia library and special needs teachers of Metropolia. Students with reading disabilities are provided with Celia IDs and guidance on how to use the services of Celia.

Communications

All library services, instructions and information are provided in both the official languages of Metropolia: Finnish and English.  Particular attention has been paid to clear language. Library staff participate in internal and external communication and accessibility trainings, and adhere to the communication guidelines of Metropolia. Following the Clear and Accessible Communication training in 2024, all library texts have been clarified and the work is still ongoing.

Future objectives

Strengthen the accessibility skills of library staff. The aim is that library staff will be better able to guide customers when they ask about e-resource services and their accessibility. 

To make library communication clear and understandable. All library staff will be involved in accessibility work.
