A large collection of English-language e-books in various scientific areas. 

Use and accessibility

E-books are in EPUB format. You can read them in your browser (Read Online) or downloaded to a reader. You can change the colours and enhance the contrasts of the e-books both in the browser and in the reader.

Some e-books can be used by 1-3 people at the same time. Some e-books have unlimited access.

Listen

You can listen to e-books that open in your browser using the Read Aloud functions in your browser.

To listen, you need to activate a separate Accessibility mode in Ebook Central (Profile > Accessibility Settings). In accessibility mode, images may not be visible.

Download

Download availability varies from book to book, not all books can be downloaded. Downloading a book may be blocked if the e-book is on loan or you have 10 downloaded books in your account. 

To download, you will need Adobe Edital Digitions. If you do not have the Adobe Digital Editions reader, please download and activate it. 

In Ebook Central,  select the device you are downloading on (computer, mobile device). If you already have the reader on your device, select "Done with this step", the loan period and "Download". The downloaded e-book file is in the format .acsm.

It is also possible to download individual chapters of the book.

Print

Printing and copying for your own personal use is allowed. There are differences between printing and copying per book, you can see them in the service.

Registration and additional features

Additional features, such as underlining, require you to log in with your Metropolia username.

Ebsco eBook Collection

Includes e-books on a variety of subjects. 

Use and accessibility

Search by topic, or browse ebooks in the eBooks section at the top. Click on the PDF Full Text or EPUB Full Text link to read the eBook. You do not need to create an Ebsco account to read the books. The book will automatically close if it is not read for 30 minutes.

Restrictions are per book: usually no more than 1-3 simultaneous users.

Listen

Only some e-books are accessible. Books can be listened to for example with the Read aloud function in the Edge browser. If you want to use a separate screen reader, download the book to your device in EPUB or PDF format.

Download

To download you need

  1. Adobe Digital Editions reading software.
  2. Ebsco account (free). Create an account via the Sign in link at the top of the service.

Not all books can be downloaded. Downloaded books have a loan period of 1-7 days and are in PDF or EPUB format.

Print

In the book details you can see how many pages you can print. Printing is allowed for personal use only.

Registration and additional features

Create a personal Ebsco account if you want to access features that require user authentication, such as book downloads and adding notes to e-books.

Ellibs

Ellibs is a multidisciplinary service, with around 350 e-books in the Metropolia collection.

Use and accessibility

You can find these e-books in the Ellibs service under Library Collection. The books are mainly in Finnish. Some of the books can be read in the browser. If a book cannot be read in a browser, you can download it to your device or read it in the Ellibs app. The number of simultaneous users of the books varies.

Downloading to your device

E-books can be downloaded to your own device, in which case you will need Thorium Reader.

After you have downloaded Thorium Reader
  1. Choose a loan time and click "Download (Thorium Reader)".
  2. The e-book will be downloaded onto your computer as a lcpl file. Open the file in Thorium Reader.

In Thorium Reader, books are opened with a user-specific password that you can check in Ellibs Library > My Bookshelf.

Ellibs app

You can also access Ellibs e-books with the Ellibs app. Download the app from your app store (App Store or Google Play).

Log in to the app with your Metropolia username.

  • If the app stops after entering your usernames, close the login box. This will allow you to continue in the app.
  • If no books are found when you return to the app, log out of the app and log back in.
Listen

Listening should be possible if the e-book is in EPUB format. Thorium Reader has a Text-to-Speech function that reads the text of books in EPUB format.

E-books are protected by DRM software, which may prevent you from listening to them. There is no read-aloud function in the mobile app.

Reserve books

If all the copies of the e-book you want are on loan, you can reserve it on the service. You will be notified when your booking has been received at the email address you have entered in the service. If you use the Ellibs app, you can also activate the app's notifications for reservations.

If you want to time the arrival of the book you have booked to a time that suits you, you can lock your place in the booking queue.

Print

Printing restrictions vary from book to book. On the Ellibs website, the information for each book indicates whether printing is allowed.

O'Reilly

O'Reilly contains tens of thousands of e-books, audiobooks, videos and online courses, especially in the fields of technology and business.

Use and accessibility

You can read the books in your browser or with a mobile app. Books read in a browser can be listened to using the Read aloud functions, or add-ons, in browsers. The reader view can be adjusted from the book's nut icon (Reader Settings). 

Listen to audio books

The service offers a large number of audiobooks in various fields. You can listen to them in your browser or in the mobile app.

Log in to the app 
  1. Enter your Metropolia email address on the app's login page.
  2. The app will redirect you to the Metropolia login page, log in with your Metropolia username.

Springer eBooks

E-books in various fields, including education, chemistry and materials science, behavioural science, business, medicine, engineering, social sciences and law, and information technology. 

Use and accessibility

Read the books in your browser or download a chapter or the full book in PDF or EPUB format. To download EPUB, you need Adobe Digital Editions application. 

Listen to books using the Read aloud add-on in your browser.

VitalSource

E-books from the publisher Pearson.

Use and accessibility

You can read e-books without creating an account. Select  “Continue without an Account” and agree to the terms of use.

Read and listen

You can find available e-books under Explore. Books are read in a browser. Click on Borrow and then Open Book.

If all copies of the e-book are in use, access may be blocked. You can find information about the number of concurrent users in the Book details section of the book.

Listening is also possible. You can find the Read Aloud function in the top right-hand menu.

Print

You can print out parts of the book. Printing options can be found in the menu in the top right-hand corner. Allowed for your own personal use only.

Download

To download an e-book to your device, you will need to create a personal account with VitalSource and download the VitalSource Bookshelf app to your device. Creating a VitalSource account and using the app is optional.

Use and accessibility

You can read books in your browser and some books can be downloaded to a device.

Read and listen

Read books in your browser. Listening is also possible. The browser reader has a text-to-speech feature that can be used on your computer and mobile device.

E-book access may be blocked when the number of users is exceeded or credits are used up.

  • Some e-books have between 100 and 400 credits. One credit means 1 user/day.
  • Some e-books have a limit on the number of users. For example, most books published by Pearson may have 1-3 concurrent users.
Download

Books are available for download in Adobe Digital Editions.

Print 

The book details show how many pages of the book you can print. Permitted for your own personal use only.

E-books in MetCat Finna

You can also find e-books on MetCat Finna. You can access e-books online or remotely by logging in with your Metropolia username and password.

Most of the e-books can be found in the basic search of MetCat Finna.

Download e-books: Adobe Digital Editions

You may need Adobe Digital Editions to download e-books for offline use:

  1. Install Adobe Digital Editions e-book reader
  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions and authorize it: click "Help" and then select "Authorize computer".
    • If you read e-books on a single computer, you can authorize the reader without an Adobe ID. Choose: "I want to authorize my computer without an ID.”
    • If you want to read e-books on multiple devices or on a mobile app, authorize the reader with Adobe ID.
  3. Download the e-book following the instructions of the e-book service you are using.
