E-resources

E-resources terms of use

The library has acquired licenses for various e-resources: databases, e-books, e-journals, and other e-resources. E-resources have their own terms of use, which define who can use the resource and for what purposes. When you use licensed e-resources, you are responsible for complying with their terms of use.

E-resources licensed by Metropolia library can be used by Metropolia students and staff in accordance with the terms of use.

The following groups of students are permitted to use the e-resources: degree students and Open University of Applied Science students. For other educational solutions and groups, check with the library, whether the participants can have access to e-resources.

Commercial use not permitted

The terms of use for e-resources prohibit commercial use, and therefore the resources cannot be used for e.g. continuing education or other commercially produced training.

Access from anywhere

E-resources can be accessed via library links on campus and remotely.

Remote access

E-resources can be accessed within the Metropolia network. Access from outside the network, for example from a home computer or phone, is possible with Metropolia user ID. Remote access is possible using the links provided by the library.

Walk-in use

All library patrons can access most of the e-resources using the computers in the library.

Terms of use may vary

There are two types of e-resources from the perspective of access rights. Those for which a licence has been acquird by the library and those that are freely available online, i.e. Open Access.

The terms of use for e-resources acquired for Metropolia are specific to each resource, but there are general rules that apply to all resources.

General terms of use

Generally you may

  • browse and search
  • print, copy and save a reasonable amount of search results or individual articles for personal study and research.
  • incorporate links to e-resources in course materials used in non-commercial teaching at Metropolia.

You may not

  • use e-resources for any commercial purposes (including continuing studies)
  • print or copy entire works, for example e-books
  • copy or store articles or other material for example in Moodle or OMA
  • use software which automatically searches or downloads resources
  • distribute, sell, publish or modify the resources
  • feed data into external artificial intelligence applications.

Please note that there may be exceptions to these general terms which must be complied with.

Resource specific terms of use

Each e-resource has terms of use that describe, among other things who can use the resource and for which purposes (e.g. whether the content may be printed, copied or stored, even partially).

You will find links to the terms of use on the individual pages of this guide. You can also find links to the terms of use in the Databases A-Z list by clicking on the copyright icon.
