Data management for RDI

""

Data management plan acts as the foundation

Well-managed data is created, stored and organised in a way that keeps it usable and reliable throughout its lifecycle. The data is described and its data protection and security ensured.

A data management plan (DMP) is a requirement in any RDI project that collects or produces research data, such as interviews or measurement results, regardless of the size of the material.

What is research data?

At Metropolia, DMPs are made at the preliminary stages of a project using the DMPTuuli tool. The plan can and should be supplemented and edited as the project moves forward.

Furthermore, the DMP must be archived as a part of the research plan when the project ends.

DMPTuuli

DMPTuuli is a tool for data management planning. It features Metropolia’s own template and instructions, as well as templates from various funders. The user interface is available in both Finnish and English. The plan can be shared with project members for the purposes of editing or feedback. It can also be downloaded onto your own computer, e.g. as PDF.

Data management practices should be based on the so-called FAIR principles, meaning that the data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

Questions in DMPTuuli guide you to pay attention to data management in compliance with the FAIR principles at the different stages of the project lifecycle.

Creating a plan in DMPTuuli

First, create an account in the DMPTuuli service. If you wish to use Haka log-in in the future, add your Haka details to your user data (Edit profile).

DMPTuuli Instruction Videos

A three-part video tutorial series on creating a data management plan for the staff of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. Produced by Joona Koiranen, translations by Elina Nurminen, 2023. Duration approximately 23 minutes. Subtitles available in Finnish and English.

Feedback in DMPTuuli

Once you have created a DMP or draft in DMPTuuli, you can send it to Metropolia’s data management specialists for comment. In DMPTuuli, go to the “Request feedback" tab and click on “Request feedback”. We aim to get back to you within 48 hours. The purpose of the feedback service is to support you in managing your data.

Support with making a data management plan

If you require additional support with creating a DMP or using DMPTuuli, you can take part in our open workshops (training calendar in OMA) or book a meeting or workshop for your RDI project. We also provide instruction via email.
