Data management for thesis

Data Management Plan

Data management always starts with planning. A data management plan should be drawn up as part of the thesis plan whenever research data is collected or produced for the thesis. The student agrees with his/her supervisor in what form the data management plan is made.

Data management planning is important because:

  • it serves as a checklist to ensure that the necessary permission and contract matters, research ethics, and data protection and information security have been taken into account in the planning of the thesis.
  • the datal remains organised and easy to manage when, for example, storage, processing and description are planned in advance.

Plan templates

There are various plan templates available for data management planning. The student agrees with the thesis supervisor on which plan template to use. Here are some options:

Data Management Plan in DMPTuuli

DMPTuuli is an online tool that allows students to create a data management plan. Registration for DMPTuuli requires your name, email and organisation.

Metropolia has its own template in DMPTuuli. It can be accessed as follows:

  1. Create a new plan.
  2. Select Metropolia as the organisation.
  3. Select "No funder".
  4. Select "DMP for thesis".

The plan

  • can be easily updated online and downloaded as a PDF to your computer or Wihi if required.
  • can be emailed to your thesis supervisor directly in DMPTuuli, and the supervisor can comment on the plan directly in the tool.
  • can be shared with read and write permissions for the plan, e.g. if several thesis writers are working on it.
